Right about the time the calendar ticked over to 2018, a rumble started growing amongst the techie types who are in charge of managing their company’s client data. That rumble started with a “GDdddrrrrrr” and seems to be hitting a crescendo with “PRay we get this right!” The key sounds in this world-wide call-to-action are: GDPR.
GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and, while it is a European regulation, it will impact any company, firm or organization that collects, processes or manages information about a European citizen, no matter where in the world that company does business.
So yeah. It’s kind of a big deal.
At a time when law firms are being targeted by cybercriminals who want to collect all of their sensitive client data, this law is particularly important. If you’re doing business with any European Union citizen, you need to be compliant!
And this regulation goes into effect soon. May 25, 2018, to be precise.
I plan to write several articles in the coming weeks about the importance of GDPR to the law firm industry (including ways that you can protect your data), but first I want to tell you about Savvy’s efforts to achieve compliance.
Our SavvyAcademyLMS stores data on all of its users, and given the number of users we host, that obviously means we store data on European Union citizens. Therefore, we need to protect their data as required by the GDPR. Serendipitously, this will mean all SavvyAcademy LMS users will benefit from the European Union’s stricter guidelines. Yay you!
Within each SavvyAcademyLMS portal, we will be introducing the controls necessary to offer your users the ability to delete their account or to download their data. We will also give administrators the ability to collect explicit consent/custom terms on a user’s initial visit to the SavvyAcademy LMS.
The GDPR regulation presents every law firm with multiple responsibilities when it comes to managing the personal information of European citizens. Savvy is staying ahead of the regulation and we’ll assure that your SavvyAcademy LMS is in compliance.
Please watch my blog for more information about the GDPR regulation and how you can keep your law firm compliant. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact me today! Doug@SavvyTraining.com, 303-800-5408.
