I’m feeling nostalgic today. My kids are out of school for the summer and yet another year has flown by. As I reflect on the last year, I think about the amazing teachers who have helped me to raise my boys to be the thinkers and compassionate people that I hope they become.
I’m so grateful to great teachers!
Then I started thinking about the great trainers I know. This word “trainer”… hmmmm, I’m thinking about that word today. Trainers are teachers, yes? I wonder how the title “trainer” came to be. And why not “teacher?” Do you think there is more or less respect for the title of “trainer” in our world today than for the title of “teacher?” That could be a rather scintillating dinner conversation, yes?
But, in my nostalgia today, I wanted to share some inspiration for my trainer friends, who teach people every single day and help to move their organizations forward. I’ve found some inspiring quotes (tape your favorite on your door or cubicle or water bottle and make a statement to your colleagues) as well as one FANTASTIC video by a slam poetry artist.
Please enjoy, and feel appreciated today!
“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”
– Carl Jung
“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.”
– Brad Henry
“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”
– Albert Einstein
“The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.”
– C. S. Lewis
“The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called ‘truth.’”
– Dan Rather
“A good teacher, like a good entertainer first must hold his audience’s attention, then he can teach his lesson.”
– John Henrik Clarke
“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.”
– Mark Van Doren
“The thing I loved the most – and still love the most – about teaching, is that you can connect with an individual or a group, and see that individual or group exceed their limits.”
– Mike Krzyzewski
“Most of us end up with no more than five or six people who remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who remember them for the rest of their lives.”
– Andy Rooney
“There are two kinds of teachers: the kind that fill you with so much quail shot that you can’t move, and the kind that just gives you a little prod behind and you jump to the skies.”
– Robert Frost
And here is that slam poetry video that I mentioned. (Apologies that it denigrates a lawyer briefly!) I think you’ll appreciate this passionate defense of teachers!
